photos from Herculaneum

looking over the site to the village of Ercolano which sits around Herculaneum

 Take-away shop
the garden area of a 'big' house. A lot was intact and all the main rooms looked out onto this garden the utility rooms and slave quarters were at the back but not open to the public
inside

on the other wall. there was nothing like this in Pompeii

another house. Imagine how much mud  has been dug out and cleaned off, imagine finding this!
petrified wood

 mud left on thewindows

what's left of the grinding flour from wheat. apparently a donkey would have been attached to the bit on the left to go round and round to work the grinder.

original floor in the women's section of the public bath- house

mud still to be cleared

that's it for Herculaneum. Fascinating is an understatement.

This is a picture if the info thingy in our  carriage of the Rome - Naples train. (top left corner)

 Some random photos of Naples
waiting in the rain to get into a pizza place recommended by Wayne. barry is under the umbrella on the left

the menu-  2 varieties, 2 sizes, very cheap

the pizza

It was very basic, overflowing with pizza, we were told that pizzas originated here and went out into the world, picture of Julia Robins eating here, pizza was very good - thanks Wayne - two guys sat with us, separately. The first guy told us the history of this place and the 2nd guy told us that to not know English is "a very big handicap"

How food is delivered fromCafes and restaurant to ????

truck parked up on the corner selling vegetables
our hotel

and that's it from Naples. After we got back from Herculaneum it was time to pack up and head to the station for the train to take us to Venice
